‘Debussy’s glittering sonata for harp, flute and viola started off a striking program which included Heinz Holliger’s Boulez-inspired Sequenzen über Johannes I,32 for solo harp, Toru Takemitsu’s And then I knew’twas wind - which has truly superb harp writing.  There was also a ‘swedish’ work in the programme, the world premiere of Axle Asimetrica by the Gothenburg based Venezuelan composer, Victor Varela.  With his original instrumentation for harp, vibraphone and marimba, he created beautiful and sensitive sounds based both on mathematical principles and sensual Latin rhythms.

Perhaps it is time again to talk about the ‘Power of the Harp?’
